Why your dog might be lowering your cortisol
The science of co-regulation, and why living with animals genuinely shifts your physiology — not just your mood.

We tend to talk about pets as 'good for mental health' in a fuzzy, feel-good way. The physiology is much more interesting than that — and the word for it is co-regulation.
What co-regulation actually means
Co-regulation is the process by which two nervous systems synchronise. It's how babies learn to settle from a calm parent, and it's how adults still down-regulate around a trusted person — or animal — whose nervous system is calmer than their own.
Animals are unusually good at this. Their nervous systems are simpler than ours, less burdened by rumination, and they default to rest more readily. When you sit with a sleeping dog, your vagal tone literally rises to meet theirs.
What the research shows
- Stroking a familiar animal for 10 minutes measurably lowers cortisol and blood pressure.
- Dog owners have lower resting heart rates and a reduced risk of cardiovascular death (a 2019 meta-analysis in Circulation).
- Oxytocin rises in both human and dog during mutual gaze — the same hormone released between mother and infant.
- Pet owners report better sleep quality and lower loneliness scores, both independent drivers of long-term health.
It goes both ways
Your animal regulates off you too. Anxious owners often have anxious dogs. Predictable routines, slow handling, calm tone of voice — these are nervous system tools that benefit both of you. Co-regulation is genuinely mutual.
If a pet isn't feasible, time with horses, friends' dogs, or even watching birds at a feeder taps into a similar (smaller) effect. Nature does some of the same work.

The takeaway
Living with an animal is a daily, low-effort nervous system intervention. The cortisol drop is real, the cardiovascular benefit is measurable, and the regulation runs both ways.
